Reading & Discussion
Reading Comics for Language and Cultural Learning
Mon. 2nd. Period David P. O'Donnell
Keywords:
Culture, Discussion, Film, Intensive Reading, Literature, Speaking, Vocabulary, Web Activities

This is an introductory language course in which we will read various comics of various genres from around the world. We will use these comics to get a better understanding of language and culture and use them as a stepping off point for discussion and writing activities. This course will share a library of materials, and online activities and resources, with a C-level class. This cross-level exchange will be an excellent opportunity for students to meet and work with peers of a higher level, and to set goals that will allow them to reach a higher level themselves.

Attendance is especially important for this class, because every week you will collaborate with the other members of your team, and you must share comics and assignments.

The Final Project for this class is a written report reviewing and discuss the 15 (or more!) comics that you read this semester.

Week 6
you will be asked to submit your report at the one-third point for review.
Week 11 you will be asked to submit your report at the two-thirds point.
One week after the 15th class you will be asked to submit the final report for review.

Failure to meet any of these deadlines may result in a lowering of your score.

Meeting dates: 9/25, 10/2, 10/9 no class, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, (baseball might affect this class), 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, 12/4, 12/11, 12/18, 12/25, 1/9 (substitute Monday held on a Tuesday, 1/15

The 15th class meeting time will be determined at a later date, and make-up classes will be offered late in the semester.

Though this is a reading course, it is hoped that students will improve all language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) and will begin to develop more robust vocabularies.

Students will have access to hundreds of comics of numerous genres. From these sources, students will explore various aspects of culture and language, and improve their English proficiency.
