Reading
Young Adult Literature
- An introductory level course in reading and culture
Mon. 2nd. Period David P. O'Donnell
Keywords:
Intensive Reading, Literature, Vocabulary, Web Activities

In this class, students will read, discuss, and analyze Young Adult (commonly abbreviated to "YA") literature and related materials about education and entertainment for young people. Our primary text will be "Walk Two Moons", by Sharon Creech. This novel has a lot to teach us about American culture, Southern American English dialect, and family. It won one of the highest prizes for YA literature (the Newberry Medal).  In Addition to reading this great book, we will read from other sources, watch, analyze and discuss, many Young Adult and Children's movies and TV programs.

As part of the class, students will design their own web pages where they will post opinions and ideas about topics that we explore in class.

The delivery of the main text to Seikiyo will be delayed for a few weeks, so we will start the class with fun alternate readings.

This class is intended to improve student motivation, reading fluency, and vocabulary. Though it is officially a reading course, some attention will be given to multiple aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, slang, pragmatics, language history, dialect variations, etc.) and basic web page development and design.
