This course is entirely online. Sessions take place synchronously through Zoom.  

The main language target of the course is presentation. The course, itself, is about Japanese hospitality. Students explore both the contextual and the practical facets of Omotenashi.  They do so with the aim of strengthening their communication competency through the improvement of speaking, reading and discussion skills.


Class activities are designed in a way that enables students to think critically and to broaden their perspective of cross-cultural issues. At the end of the term, students will be able to express personal thoughts logically and with ease.

The Art of Q&A and Preparation for a Primary Speech

Students review the basics of English sentences and how to ask/answer questions.

Introducing Oneself and Small Group Feedback

Using a pre-made sample of introductory speech, students practice how to introduce themselves in small groups. The presentations are followed by a feedback from classmates.

The Art of Reporting

Students learn the fundamentals of giving a report on the basis of what they have read.

Individual Reports Session  

Using the skills learned in Week 3, students work in small group to present a report on general aspects of Omotenashi. The reports are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience mirroring skills of Week 1.

The Art of Speechmaking

Students learn how to prepare a standard speech that includes opening, development and closing.

Standard Speech Session (Group 1)

Using the skills learned in Week 5, students give short speeches on topics related to aspects of Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror the skills of Week 1.

Standard Speech Session (Group 2)

Using the skills learned in Week 5, students give short speeches on topics related to aspects of Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror the skills of Week 1.

The Art of Arguing an Opinion

Students learn the various elements for arguing and presenting an opinion.

Opinion Speech Session (Group 1)

Using the skills learned in Week 8, students practice how to give opinion speeches on the real benefits of Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror the skills of Week 1.

Using the skills learned in Week 8, students practice how to give opinion speeches on the real benefits of Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror the skills of Week 1.

The Art of Conducting a Survey and Making a Power-point Presentation

Students learn how to conduct a survey and to integrate its result in a speech.

Final Presentations (Group 1) 

Using all the skills learned in Week 2, 3, 5, 8 and 11 students give their final presentation on topics related to Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions and open discussions.

Using all the skills learned in Week 2, 3, 5, 8 and 11 students give their final presentation on topics related to Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions and open discussions.

Final Overall Review, Open Discussion and Feedback

Students review the various skills they have learned during the term for further improving their skills.

On-demand Online Office Hour 

Students attend online consultation on-demand with the course's instructor. The consultation is either individual on the basis of first come first serve or in small group.


This class is fun. (S) is given to those who: 1) have handed in assignments on time; 2) achieved 95 percent of overall points and 3) have been active during open discussions.
