Fri. 2nd. Period Walt Wyman
Keywords:
Culture, Discussion, Literature, Project, Vocabulary, Translation

In this course, we will read samples of Japanese literature by some of Japan's representative writers from the prewar period (i.e. Meiji to early Showa). You will gain hands-on translation experience by translating samples into English, both on your own and collaborating in groups. In addition, we will discuss expressions that are difficult to translate, and compare our translations with published English translations (when available). The main differences between the Advanced and Intermediate versions of this class are the length and difficulty of the samples we will be working with.

  • Gain practical experience in translation
  • Build teamwork and problem-solving skills by assisting each other with translation exercises
  • Learn about some of Japan's most interesting pre-war writers.
