In this class, you will read samples of literature by some of Japan's representative writers various genres. You will improve your writing skills by translating the samples and writing short essays about them in English. You will gain hands-on translation experience by translating texts into English while thinking about the historical context.

Delivery: Online (conducted from SFC classroom). This class is basically "on-demand". You do not have to attend the "live" classes,but it is strongly recommended.


  • Gain hands-on translation experience
  • Develop critical thinking skills by translating difficult or "untranslatable" Japanese expressions
  • Develop communication skills through discussing and debating the meaning of the texts

  • Note to international students: this class requires fairly high Japanese reading proficiency.
