授業の実施形態/Delivery This class will engage students in online Role-Playing (i.e., Tabletop RPGs, Dungeons & Dragons) to learn about and experience different kinds of advanced interactions in English. This class is designed to create a rich, task-based approach to language learning where students must use their reading, speaking, and listening skills to (a) negotiate and cooperate with their fellow players to complete the specific tasks of the games, (b) explore the role of language and identity, and (c) critically evaluate strategies necessary for the completion of those tasks. It is sometimes said that we create a new identity when we use a second language. This class will explore that by actually allowing you to create and play as a new identities. Above all, this course requires two things: (a) an open mind about playing games and learning sometimes complex rules and (b) creativity. Part of Role-Playing is to pretend and create stories using your imagination. The online nature of the course will bring certain challenges, and all of the gaming sessions will be carried out via distance (sometimes during class times, but oftentimes outside of class times). This class is NOT focused on academic English skills, but will focus on fluency, listening, and discussion. You will be expected to talk a lot in this course. Not recommended for students GIGA students from English-speaking countries who already have a near-native command of the language. |
